In fact, most of our time in the grocery store is spent at the instant noodle aisle and later of me debating why he can't buy everyone of the 20 packets of instant noodles that he has added into our trolley. So imagine Nathaniel's excitement and my dread when we found out about Segyee Mee - Instant Noodle Heaven. Segyee Mee is located as Jalan SS15/4D in Subang which is the same row as McDonalds and Burgetory. It is facing the main road and situated on the ground floor, 2 doors away from Sushi Flash. Not hard to find. Parking , like anywhere in SS14, will be close to none at lunch hours because of the many colleges near by. It will be wiser to go during the late evening. Upon entering we were greeted by a friendly waitress. She explained to us the concept of the store and how to operate the hot stoves on our tables.
Phone and keys not included
The menu with pricing is below. Click to enlarge. There are 3 choices.
We both choose to eat the buffet for RM20 each (student price) The environment of the restaurant was pleasant and clean. Air conditioned. The outdoor seating area was nice as well.
There's wifi
They definitely has a wide selection of noodles. There were more wet noodles than there were dry noodles but still a good variety. There were a number of udons as well. I was quiet surprised to see our local Maggi Mee and Indon Mee there. I would think that the main purpose of coming was to try international flavours. I was hopping to find more "expensive" noodles that I usually would not purchase at supermarkets. Like the Japanese thick udon noodles. But majority of the noodles, although large in variety, seemed to be from the cheaper range.
2 racks full of noodles. Nathaniel was like a little boy in a candy shop.
The condiments provided to eat along with the noodles were however disappointing . Pictures from other bloggers seemed to have more variety. Plus, a large majority of the things were common frozen food like sausages and crab sticks. Nothing special. They didn't even have those panda shaped fish cakes :( .The veggie was also not fresh. I could have gotten everything in Tesco easily. I was expecting at least some beef and chicken slices or some broccoli. However, they surprisingly provided small slices of cheese. I've never had cheese with my noodles before so this was quiet interesting for me. Maybe if I ate enough cheese , the value would add up to the RM20 I paid for the really un-worth-it meal.
In all about 14 frozen food varieties to choose from and 9 types of veggies (if you count frozen corn as a vegetable)
The sauces that were provided. Most of them were to chinese-y for my liking.
The refillable soft drink machine was not functioning. The drinks we were left to choose from was water, or diluted orange and pepsi cordial. Disappointing. It would have been nice if they provided us with the cans of soft drinks that they were selling in their ala carte menu. I mean, only fair right?
The buffet also provided dessert which was ice cream.
The vanilla was close to gone which left us with chocolate, corn and raspberry swirl. The staff didn't bother to change the tub of vanilla even though they obviously saw that there was nothing left. I think this is what I enjoyed most about the buffet. The traditional ice cream pops. Is that what they call it? They had them in Assam , Sarsi and one more flavor. I forgot. I had one before my meal, in the middle of my meal and after my meal. But no amount of ice cream I ate that day could amount to what I paid for the buffet. Still a very un-worth-it buffet. Nathaniel's first choice of instant noodles was a hot beef noodle soup from Taiwan I had this as my first option because I wanted to try something dry. It also came in a packet of 2 mini noodles so I thought I could try just one noodle cluster and not fill myself up too much. Bad choice. It tasted ugh, Wasn't my cup of tea. It was just no. Nathaniel's second choice was a chili crab flavored pack. Although lacking in actual crab meat, this tasted decent. My last choice was a beef and radish flavored packet. I was desperate to wash my pallet after my mouth was met with the horrendous flavor of my previous choice. This was not bad. The flavor was there but once again, it's instant noodles. You can't expect much. It would have been great if there was beef and some red dates provided to throw into the soup. In all. there is a whole lot of room for Segye Mee to improve. They could start by offering a better variety of condiments. Maybe even up the quality of their instant noodle variety. To enable people to try more flavors of instant noodles at one visit (after all, isn't that the whole purpose of the shop?) they could maybe offer smaller portions of noodles in each pack. Maybe repackage the noodles?
This is an average size of a packet of instant noodles. Pretty big. I would say an average person could only eat the most, 2 packets.
The way I see it, the only reason to go to Segye Mee is if you are in a big group. Then at least you get to taste a variety of noodles. If you are going a one or with another friend, I say save up your RM20 and buy 2 full packets of noodles from your convenience store. You'll even get back some change too. And if you do go, you better be one hell of an instant noodle cook. Since you are cooking everything yourself, you've only got yourself to blame if your dish comes out bad. Nathaniel and I got some of the water measurements wrong thus some of our noodles came out sometimes too diluted and sometimes too dry. And the waiters give you a dirty look if you waste the noodles. I know . I tried hiding as much of my excess food in the used packets.
Overcooked noodles. Meh
Overall a 3/10. It's a clean shop with a good variety of low quality noodles. The idea is there. Everything else was just disappointing. Take your RM20 and you could find way better food around that area for even cheaper.
