50% of Malaysians are overweight? 1 in 5 of us have or are going to have diabetes? in all, 7/10 of Malaysians have a Non- Communicable Disease such as Hypertension, High Cholesterol, High Blood Pressure, etc I know what's on your mind - It won't happen to you or maybe this is something you should only worry about when you're elder. Well, you're wrong. I see the family and friends that I am surrounded with growing elder everyday. As their age increases, so does the probability of them catching on to a health issue. Whenever I go back to my hometown, I would hear about another church member or family member being admitted into the hospital. It makes me wonder if these folk would have led their life any differently when they were younger. One thing I am sure of is that I don't want to be held captive to the "what if's" when I am elder. And neither should you. I was invited over for UiTM's World Heart Day Celebration over the weekend and got myself educated on living a healthy lifestyle, eating healthily and most importantly, how to take care of my heart.
Gone are the days of being a syok sendiri blogger. I'm actually part of the media team now! YAY! *pats self on the back*
The carnival with a cause was a first time event for the Faculty of Medicine of UiTM. Held in their Sungai Buloh Campus, the one day event saw members of the public coming in for free health screenings, health talks, forums and healthy cooking demonstrations.

Booths set up to provide the rakyat with free health screenings
Any event with a bouncy castle is a legit one in my eyes
The heart is also known as the blood-pump of the body. The blood carries food and oxygen to all parts of the body and carries away carbon dioxide and waste materials. So its safe to say, your heart is a big deal! People of my age would usually have the condition of their hearts waaaaaay at the back of their heads. After all, we are at the peak of our health ! We're not slaves to our bodies. In fact, we try to stretch our body's tolerance a little more everyday by sleeping a little later , eating whatever we want whenever we want (I'm extremely guilty of this), and consuming all sorts of harmful substances for our body. If I learnt anything from my visit to UiTM's Health Carnival it would be that taking care of your heart should start now, especially when we are young. The most obvious thing to do would be to live a healthier lifestyle. Eat healthy, exercise, get sleep, etc. These are things that we already know about and has been preached to us countless of times but they are not to be taken lightly. The youngest Malaysian who died of a heart attack was a 13-year-old boy. You can read about it here. So why built up the probability of you getting sick when you can prevent it? Early detection was taught during the carnival. For young adults like us, the experts highly encourage regular checks to be done. You don't even have to go to the doctors for checks like this, your local pharmacist should be able to do it. In fact, Caring Pharmacy (Click to find your nearest outlet) provides free pharmacist counseling services, free blood pressure checks and other health checks at a minimum fee. However, it is important to go to bring your readings to your family physicians as you cannot expect the pharmacist to provide you with the best cures. If you are an out-of-towner or is yet to have a family doctor, do give the UiTM Clinical Training Center in Sungai Buloh (click for contact details) a call to schedule your appointment. To find out more about this Clinical Center click here. UiTM hopes to make Health Carnivals a yearly event. Next year, their trying their best to have it in a location closer to town. The school also has a fun run planned for next year. Thanks for having me UiTM! On a side note... Labels: adverts, events, kl, malaysia 7 lovely comments ✿ |
