Chapter 2 : Preparatory Emails
Emails were being exchanged between Dato Anna, the pageant organizer and I. There was a particular email that had a series of questions that I needed to answer. My answers would then be published to the public in the future to read. I found this quite a daunting task actually. As much as I wanted to answer the questions honestly, part of me also wanted to answer what the public wanted to hear. It was a struggle to find a balance between the two. The questions and my answers were as below. 1. Why did you decide to join Miss Malaysia World 2014? Miss Malaysia World 2014 came at a really good time for me. I am just about to graduate and am looking for an adventure before I start my journey in the 'working' world. You heard that right !- an adventure. I doubt that it is a common word used by beauty queens to epitomize their pageant journey but I do find it very fitting. As mush as the competition is a platform for me to empower youths and hopefully impact some lives along the way, it is also an exciting journey of discovery for me. So why not take a chance? 2. If you were the winner of Miss Malaysia World 2014, how would you represent Malaysia in the international pageant? If I was Miss Malaysia World 2014, I would like to showcase Malaysia's youthful exuberance to the world. Don't get me wrong, I did not forget Malaysia's rich culture or her elegant historical elements but I do believe that the country's youth is something we often look past when showing off our country. The youths of Malaysia are a loud, bright bunch and I believe that we have a lot going on for us. I would like to bring light to their opinions, ideas and creations. 3. Who is your inspiration? I take inspiration from everyday people and everyday things so my inspirations changes all the time. For now, I am very inspired by Maya Angelou, an American poet. It is very unfortunate that I found out about her work only after she passed but death does not put a halt to her ability to inspire people. Maya is a great example of a strong women who has went through the many hurdles of life and walked out tall. 4. What does a beauty queen mean to you? Being a beauty queen to me means being a role model. I believe the society's perception of beauty today has became very blurry and at times, even faulty. Young girls are told that they have to be a certain size or act a certain way before they can be called 'beautiful'. I believe that by being a beauty queen, it is my responsibility to convey the message to young girls that they don't have to be a certain way in order to be beautiful. 5. What are your strong qualities? I believe I have 3 strong qualities. The first being my love for people. Growing up, my parents showed me the importance of giving back to my community and up till today, charity remains very close to my heart. The second would be that I am easily approachable. I have been known to be able to make friends in a snap of a finger and I believe that this would be to my advantage in a competition with so many great personalities to get to know. The last and most important of my qualities would be my curiosity. The world is my oyster and I'm always an eager student. In an email I was also asked to choose my preference of a one piece or two piece swimming suit. I chose the first option, not that I had anything against the latter. I do own a couple of bikini's myself. It is just that for this pageant I was in the opinion that showing less would be more. Due to circumstances I was not able to return back some emails immediately. I remember taking 3 days to reply the email containing the answers to the questions above. I was reminded by Dato' Anna that timeliness was an important quality of a beauty queen and immediate replies were very much appreciated. She also shared to me that the judging process of Miss World Malaysia was not solely on the pageant day but had already begun. She had her eyes on every girl and wanted to ensure that we were all aware of that so that we would be at our best behavior all the time. With that I made it a point to return every email as soon as I could. I still had not met any of the girls neither did I know of anyone who was joining. I was informed that there was an official photo shoot to be held soon and once again reminded to tone up and 'stay healthy'. I have to say, I was rather excited about the photo shoot.... If my writing have been informative to you or maybe brightened up your day in anyway, I ask that you do me a favor and go here and here and click the 'like' button. Every vote counts as an extra point for the subsidiary title 'Miss Social Media'. Thank you :) Labels: events, kl, malaysia, me, pageant diaries, uni 0 lovely comments ✿ |
