I will not lie... .....I drive and text.... *looks from side to side* okay, I drive and text ALOT. *scoughs* Okay FINE!, I drive and text all the time. We , youths have grown to be geniuses in multitasking. In a recent survey by Oprah.com, 77 % of respondents said they've texted or sent mobile e-mail while driving; 41% while skiing, horseback riding, or biking; 11 % during a romantic interlude; and 16 percent while at a funeral. (okay, can someone tell me how you ski and text??) 46% of drivers ages16 to 17 admit to texting while driving. (I seriously think that the other 53% of them are lying, and the 1% has some disabilty with their fingers) Driving while text messaging is dangerous - even more hazardous than talking on a cell phone. According to a recent study by the Virginia Tech Transport Institute, people that text while driving are 23 times more likely to crash than non distracted drivers. Whenever we text, our focus on the road is taken away for an average of 4.6 seconds. Think that's no big deal? (Stupid ah??) 4.6 seconds is all that is needed to travel the length of a football field at 55 mph. 4.6 seconds is all an engineer needed to cause the 2008 Chatsworth Train Collision that took away 25 lives. 13 of the 25 of them were married. 5 of them were barely 20. 4.6 seconds was all it needed to kill 14 year old Daniel Oates when his bicycle was struck by a pickup truck, whose driver was texting. 4.6 seconds is what killed Heather L.Hurd, 26 who was on the was home from the wedding planners. ( YES, SHE WAS FREGGIN GETTING MARRIED!!!) I think it's time for us to rise up. Or, well, put our thumbs down. Oprah.com has came up with the NO PHONE ZONE pledge which is a pledge where we can choose between- Not texting with our phone while driving -Not texting and using a hands free to answer calls when driving or -No texting while driving and stopping the car at a save location to use the phone This pledge was made able on January 2009, and so far, there has been 311, 556 pledges made. IT'S NEVER TOO LATE TO PLEDGE! just click here and just so you know the point of taking the pledge is the fact that you'll actually fulfill it. or in the context above, you are how you drive Drive Save
